William Howard Holmes

William Howard Holmes, 88, a longtime resident of Jackson, TN, died Friday, October 12, 2012.
He was born November 27, 1923 in Ways Mills, Quebec and came to America when he was eleven years old. Howard served in the Army Air Corp in north Africa during WWII, and lived half his life in South Bend, IN; working at Studebaker and later, Bendix. He moved to Jackson, TN with Bendix in 1973 and soon came to love the area; retiring here in 1986.
He enjoyed his work, but treasured his free time. He was an avid golfer, continuing to play twice weekly into his 80’s. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, coin collecting, gardening and spending time with his family. He was a member of VFW Post 6496, where he and Leona spent many Saturday nights ‘cutting a mean rug’. Howard touched many lives and was always ready to lend a helping hand. His strength of character was an inspiration to everyone who knew him.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Louise Elizabeth Holmes; his father, Clayton Alfred Holmes; his mother, Myra Jane Holmes; his brother, Alan Bernard Holmes; and his sister, Jean Holmes LeVay. Survivors include his loving companion, Anna Leona Hutson of Jackson; two sons, Gregory Reier (Thomas Shearer) Holmes of Murfreesboro, TN and Douglas Howard (Allison) Holmes of Little Elm, TX; three granddaughters, Kathyrn Holmes Luddeke, Shalyn Holmes Berkowitz and Kristin Ann Coots; two grandsons, Brenden Gregory Holmes and William Carroll Holmes; and six great grandchildren.
A celebration of his life and a time of remembrance will be held in the chapel at Arrington Funeral Directors on Saturday, October 20th at 3:00 p.m. Friends are welcome to come and share a favorite memory, story, joke, or photo. Howard often said he hoped there would be more laughter than tears when people thought of him.
