Laverne Boone

July 29, 1924 — December 4, 2021

LaVerne Powell Boone, age 97, died peacefully in the early morning hours of Saturday, December 4, 2021, at Northbrooke Healthcare in Jackson, Tennessee.

She was born in Alamo, TN on July 29, 1924, the daughter of the late Claude and Pearl Gaba Gourley. After graduating from Jackson High School LaVerne traveled to Washington, DC and obtained a job with the FBI. She later worked for Southern Trailways Bus Lines and Mitchell’s Furniture Store in Jackson.

She was active at West Jackson Baptist Church. She taught the 3-year old’s, sang in the church choir and performed solos. She volunteered at Jackson-Madison County General Hospital for 15 years, receiving a plaque for her work with pastoral care.

LaVerne is survived by her three sons, Joe Q. Powell and wife Donna of Jackson, TN, Tom Powell and wife Djuna of Hempstead, TX, and Dwight Powell and wife Carolyn of Hoschton, GA; eight grandchildren, David Q. Powell, Robert M. Powell, Misty Powell Glover, Lauren Powell Watson, Daniel Thomas Powell, Keisha Powell, Kimberly Powell, and Christopher Powell; sixteen great-grandchildren, Korinna Powell, Keenan Powell, Kory Powell, Kaylee Powell, Maysie Glover, Maddux Glover, Adalie Watson, Hunter Watson, Jayla Powell, Aidyn Fulton, Audrey Powell, Brantley Powell, Hunter Powell, Charlotte Powell, Alexis Powell and Aiden Powell; and former daughter-in-law, Susan Powell-Klanke of Sealy, TX.

She was preceded in death by her adoptive parents Joe and Velma Barham, her birth parents Claude and Pearl Gaba Gourley,husbands Quinton Powell and Lester Boone and a grandson Steven Powell.

SERVICES: Funeral services will be held Wednesday, December 8, 2021, at 1:00PM in the chapel of Arrington Funeral Directors with Rev. Jeff Moody and Rev. Lonnie Sanders officiating. Burial will follow in Highland Memorial Gardens.

The family will be receiving friends on Wednesday from 11:30AM until service time at 1:00PM.

Because of LaVerne’s love for children and being a former orphan, the family is requesting that memorial contributions be directed to Tennessee Children’s Home, P. O. Box 10, Spring Hill, TN 37124.
