Joseph W. New, 92, died on Monday, May 20, 2013 at Maplewood Healthcare of Jackson.
Mr. New was born in Haskell, OK on September 2, 1920, the son of the late Earl James and Amy Wilson New. He proudly served his country during WWII in the Army-Air Corp. He was a graduate of Texas Tech University and held certifications as a civil and mechanical engineer and land surveyor. He began his professional career with Phillips Petroleum Company in Oklahoma and Texas and later co-owned New and Thompson Engineering in Hot Springs, AR. He moved to Jackson in June of 1974 and established Tennessee Aircraft Services. He was a licensed private pilot, flying into his 80’s. He was a member of Gideons International for over sixty years in five different states, holding all the local offices and one state office in the Gideons organization.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Barker New of Jackson, TN; a son, Paul New and wife Helen of Jackson, TN; three daughters, Linda Grisham of Winston, GA, Janice McWilliams and husband Billy of St. Petersburg, FL and Judy Rowe of Hot Springs, AR; a brother, Paul New and wife Grace of Denver City, TX; a sister Mary Nelson of The Woodlands, TX; eight grandchildren; Jeff Grisham and wife Dee, Todd Grisham and wife Alyson, Wendy Grisham, Michelle Rowe, Kevin Rowe and wife Angela, Lana New and husband Tony, Jared New Hirsch, and Lydia New, and eight great grandchildren. Preceding him in death were a brother, Earl New, son-in-laws, James Grisham and Raymond Rowe, and a great-grandson, Luke Hirsch.
The family is requesting that memorial donations be directed to Gideons International, Jackson West Camp, P. O. Box 173, Jackson, TN 38302-0173.
SERVICES: Visitation with the family will be on Wednesday, May 22, 2013 from 5:00 – 7:00 PM. Funeral service will be 11:00 AM, Thursday, May 23, 2013 in the chapel of Arrington Funeral Directors. Burial will follow in Highland Memorial Gardens.
