Joanne Burks

Joanne Burks, born September 13, 1936, a Jackson, TN resident, departed this life peacefully on Saturday, July 16, 2022, at Baptist Memorial Hospital East in Memphis, TN. She was born in the Gravel Hill community of McNairy County, TN, the daughter of Thomas and Burlene Sipes Roberts. She married young and raised her children in both Corinth, MS and Memphis, TN. In 1987, she met and married the love of her life, Fred Burks, a Pearl Harbor survivor who preceded her in death. She met a host of friends through her love of music and line dancing. She also enjoyed karaoke, gardening, cooking, travelling, politics, daily word puzzles, and Cardinals baseball.

She was affectionately known as “Nana” to her children and grandchildren, and there will never be another to hold that title with the pride, distinction, and absolute devotion that she felt and displayed each and every day.

She is survived by her daughter, Lavonn Culver (Steve) of Collierville, TN; son, Hubert Culver Jr. (Kathy) of Jackson, TN; son, Lanny Culver (Dana) of Lexington, TN; seven grandchildren; twelve great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and one brother, Thomas Roberts Jr. (Mary) of Mason, TN. She was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, Jimmy Roberts; and two sisters, Johnnie Fay Jennings and Ione Wood.

A Celebration of Life Gathering will be held on Monday, July 25, 2022, from 12-2pm in the chapel of Arrington Funeral Directors with remarks given by friends and family.
