Charles F. Hampton

December 5, 1935 — February 14, 2021

Charles Fay Hampton, born December 5, 1935 in Bemis, Tennessee, finished his earthly race on February 14, 2021 in Nashville, Tennessee. Charles was raised in a Christian home and from an early age committed his life to serving his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. He was devoted to his God, his family, his church, music and work. He was known for his impeccable tenor singing voice and his engaging smile.

Charles was preceded in death by his parents, Elbert and Vivia Hampton; and by his beloved wife of 61 years, Alice Vera Ivy Hampton. He is survived by his brother, Hillard Hampton; his children: Jerolyn Nerren (Barry), Phillip Hampton and Timothy Hampton (Erika); his four grandchildren: Andrea Nerren Bell (Mike), Keith Nerren (Bethany), Kaelyn Hampton, and Kassidy Hampton; and five great-grandchildren: Olivia Bell, Phillip Bell, Matthew Bell, Jonah Nerren, and Sawyer Nerren.

Charles served his country in the United States Army and was stationed in San Antonio, TX from 1959 to 1960. While in the army, Charles married the love of his life, Alice Vera Ivy, on April 21, 1959. After his time in the Army, Charles and Alice made their home in Jackson, Tennessee. The Hampton family lived in West Memphis, Arkansas for six years before moving back to Jackson where they lived until 2020. Charles lived in Nashville, Tennessee near his two sons for the past 10 months.

Charles was one of the founding members of Lighthouse United Pentecostal Church where he served in numerous leadership roles. He served as a board member, secretary/treasurer, Sunday school teacher, and music leader. Charles and Alice touched many lives with their musical gifts that God gave them. For years, Charles and Alice were responsible for leading service and worship at virtually every service at their local church: Charles, singing and leading, and Alice, playing the piano. Charles had a special gift to inspire worship to the Lord when he stepped behind the pulpit to lead the congregation in song. Charles and Alice were a team; and from the early days of their marriage, they made a commitment to use their strength and talents to serve the Lord.

Charles was a dedicated businessman who worked for 42 years for the Sherwin-Williams Company. He was known by many of his customers as “Charlie”. He managed stores for Sherwin-Williams in both Jackson, Tennessee and West Memphis, Arkansas. He retired from the company in 2000.

As dedicated as Charles was to his duties at work and the church, his family was his priority at all stages in his life. As parents, grandparents, and great-grandparents, Charles and Alice excelled at making family events epic events. From the oldest to the youngest, no one in the Hampton family felt any distance from Nana and Da. They lived their lives for their children.

Charles’ beloved Alice preceded him in death by 11 months, just 1 month from their 61st wedding anniversary. Due to the pandemic, the family has not yet held a public celebration of life service for Alice. As Charles and Alice were such an inseparable team, it seems fitting and right to celebrate the blessed lives of Charles and Alice Hampton in one service now that Charles has joined his wife in their eternal home.

Paul wrote in 2 Timothy 4:7: “I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith. Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day: and not to me only, but unto all them also that love his appearing.” This is the testimony of Charles and Alice Hampton.
