William James "Chip" Coughlin, Jr.

August 22, 1955 — November 30, 2015

On Monday, November 30th, William James Coughlin Jr., lovingly known as “Chip,” went to be with Jesus after an extremely short illness. He had been surrounded by family, many friends, and loving nurses at JMCGH. Chip was born on August 22, 1955 to the late Bill and Betty Coughlin of Jackson. He was educated in Madison County schools and graduated from his beloved UT Knoxville. On December 9, 1978 he married Sarah Grace who grieves his passing with tears but laughter as he was a total joy to share life with for 37 years. He leaves a most cherished daughter Betsy, a beloved brother who was his best friend Chris Coughlin, Daisy the beautiful family mermaid, brother in laws who were brothers, sister in laws who were sisters, nieces and nephews he regarded as his children, and hundreds of friends who loved the “gentle giant.” He had a special partner in crime Darrell Hicks who has brought so much joy to the family.

Chip had many accomplishments throughout his life, but the one he was most proud of was being a 53 gallon blood donor for Lifeline Blood Services. He has been described as “the most giving man in West Tennessee.” If you wish to do anything in his memory, please donate your blood to save the lives of others. He loved to hunt and was a member of the Tally Ho Hunting Club. He dearly loved to tell long stories of the “big one” that hangs on the wall in his home. Yes, Chip was known for his long stories.

Chip had many different vocations during his lifetime, whether it was Plant Manager of Martha White Foods, working with the Kramer/White family at Golden Circle Ford, or managing the Old English Inn for four years where he had the opportunity to minister to many travelers just passing through. His true love was teaching middle school boys at Englewood Baptist Church and going to 15 different youth camps. Chip was the very best at loving on students, many of whom returned to visit with him this past week.

Visitation will be Friday, December 4 at Arrington Funeral Directors from 4-7 p.m. Since a deer stand is too small and Neyland Stadium is too far away, there will be a gathering of friends and family to celebrate his life on Saturday, December 5 at Cajon Cookers, 18 Three Way Lane at 10 a.m., where he spent countless hours with precious friends. Come as you are comfortable, whether in a suit, jeans, or Tennessee orange. Burial will be in Ridgecrest Cemetery. The family would like to thank special family friend Dr. John Jenkins for his wisdom, love, and support. In lieu of flowers, please take your sweetheart out to dinner and enjoy life.
