It is with great sadness that the family of Karen Lee Johnston announces her passing on Wednesday, April 18, 2018 at the age of 69 years old. Karen was a doting wife to her husband Carl of 50 years and a loving mother to her three daughters Lora (Darin), Shelly (Lee), and Kristin (Trent). Karen was a devoted grandmother and her legacy lives on through her seven grandchildren, Jacob, Josh, Kathryn, Luke, Allison, Sarah, and Veronica. Karen is also loved and remembered by her mother Elizabeth Smid, sister Kathleen Hartigan (Matthew) and her brother Bob Smid (Theresa). She was predeceased by her father Robert Smid.
Karen grew up in Wheaton, IL and attended Wheaton Central High School. She later went on to attend Westmar College where she met and fell in love with her husband Carl Johnston. They spent time in Fort Benning, Georiga and Rockford IL, before settling in Germantown, TN to raise their three daughters. Karen worked as a manager at Hallmark, spent time with her family at the lake and enjoyed cheering on her daughters and Tigers basketball. She and Carl enjoyed traveling and seeing several parts of the world. Karen always had a love of horses and in her later years she and Carl moved to Jackson, TN. It was there that they bred and cared for horses, Karen’s favorite hobby. She spent time training her quarter horses to show and riding them with friends. Karen had a strong faith and was very active in her church and her community enjoying spending time with the Yada Sisterhood Organization. Karen was a gift to all who were blessed to know her and will be fondly remembered and dearly missed by many.
Visitation will be held Sunday, April 22, 2018 from 12:30-2pm, Service at 2pm at Arrington Funeral Directors. Fellowship to follow at Lester’s Chapel UMC 782 Harts Bridge Rd, in Jackson, TN.
In Lieu of flowers donations can be made in Karen’s name to St Jude Children’s Hospital, 262 Danny Thomas Pl., Memphis, TN 38105.
