Dr. Herbert Higdon

Funeral services for Dr. Herbert R. Higdon, age 89, will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, August 19, 2016 at West Jackson Baptist Church, with Rev. Ricky Clark of West Jackson Baptist Church officiating. Burial will follow in Highland Memorial Gardens, led by Rev. Jerry Woods. Arrington Funeral Directors is in charge of arrangements.

Dr. Higdon was born on February 4, 1927, in Parkin, AR, the son of the late Ralph and Pearl Higdon. He married Mary Lou Lankford on June 20, 1947, a union that lasted for 64 years, until she passed away in 2011. He graduated from Union University in 1950, completed his Master’s of Divinity at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, and earned his Doctorate of Ministry at Southern Baptist Theological Seminary.

Dr. Higdon served for over 60 years as a Baptist minister in various churches including Scenic Hills Baptist Church, Memphis, TN, First Baptist Church, Dyer, TN, and Lockeland Baptist Church, Nashville, TN. In 1982, he became the Director of Missions for the Madison-Chester Association of Baptists and the Crockett County Baptist Association until he retired. He served for many years on the Board of Trustees for Union University, the Executive Board of Tennessee Baptist Convention, and was the president of the Tennessee Baptist Convention in 1997.

He is survived by his three daughters, Anita Simmons and husband, Jim, of Memphis, TN, Nancy Tucker and husband, Tommy, of Jackson, TN, and Susan Hopper and husband, Don, of Jackson, TN; three grandchildren, Ben Hoskins and wife, Tabitha, Rebecca Tucker and Zachary Tucker, and four great-grandchildren, Hope, Hannah, Caleb, and Nathan Hoskins; and one sister, Betty Hayes and husband, Jim, of Ft. Myers, FL.

Pallbearers to serve will be Zachary Tucker, Jim Simmons, Tommy Tucker, Don Hopper, Jerry Woods, and Terry Buckley.

The family is requesting in lieu of flowers, that memorial gifts be directed to Union University, Jackson, TN or Hartland Community Church, Jackson, TN, a church plant of West Jackson Baptist Church. Contributions to the church can be mailed to 200 E 10th St. Trenton, TN 38382.

The family will be receiving friends on Thursday, August 18, 2016 from 4 p.m. until 6 p.m., at Arrington Funeral Directors, 148 W. University Parkway, (731) 668-1111 and on Friday, August 19, 2016 from 12 p.m. until 1 p.m. at West Jackson Baptist Church.
