Clarence Eugene “Gene” Elder, age 80, died at Alcoa Pines Health and Rehabilitation in Benton Arkansas on Saturday October 11, 2014.
Born December 7, 1933 in Jackson, Tennessee, to Louise Dunham Elder and Floyd Everett Elder. He attended North Side High School and graduated in 1951. After living in Jackson for 79 years he moved to Benton Arkansas in 2013 to be closer to his immediate family.
Survivors include his wife of 62 years Sue Elder; sister Melba Johns; son Randy Elder and wife Janie; 2 granddaughters Rachael Blasingame (husband Michael) and Pam Picard (husband Jeremy); and great grandchildren Ranen and Ashli Blasingame.
Gene was a member of Ararat Baptist Church where he served as a deacon; involved with the Truckers Chapel ministry; active in the men’s Bible class and served on many committees.
Gene loved camping and was a member of the West Tennessee Traveling Sam’s Club. He was active in organizing the Westover fire department and served as Captain and fire fighter for many years.
Gene worked for the State of Tennessee and later the City of Jackson as a fire and building inspector. Early in his life he worked for Owens Corning Fiberglass.
Services will be held at 1 pm on Thursday, October 16th at Ararat Baptist Church, 3608 Brownsville Hwy., Jackson, TN 38301. A visitation will be held immediately preceding the service from 11 am till 1 pm. Burial at the Ararat Church Cemetery will follow the service. Pall bearers are Cory Berard, Michael Blasingame, Bill Blurton, Grant Collins, and Neal Crews. Honorary pall bearer is Jeremy Picard. Ararat church deacons and Men’s Bible class are asked to sit together. Family and friends are welcome at these services.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions should be made to the Ararat Baptist Church Cemetery Fund.
